I consider myself a bit of a margarita connoisseur. If it’s summertime–and especially if I’m near a body of water–you can pretty much bet on that order.
You can also say I’m a bit of a margarita purist. Nothing is worse than the overly-sweet-made-by-a-bad-mix-downright-disappointing kind. We’ve all been there.
When the skinny margarita craze came along, I’ll be honest…I was not a believer. I assumed you just couldn’t make a low cal version that came close to “the real thing”. That was until one fateful New York night at Rosa Mexicano. I was at dinner with some girlfriends and they each ordered the skinny margarita. When the waiter got to me, I quietly quizzed him…I looked him in the eye and made him promise he wouldn’t disappoint me with his low cal alternative. Succumbing to his conviction, I decided to give it a try.
WOW. He was right.
I quietly quizzed him again, and this time for the magical recipe. Here, my darlings, is the best skinny margarita you’ll every try.
Ingredients
A splash of fresh squeezed orange juice
.5 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
.5 ounce raw agave
2 ounces 100% agave tequila (you may have to spend a little more, but it will be free from corn syrup and fillers that pack on the calories)
Directions
Combine all the ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker.
<Shake, Shake, Shake>
Pour over ice.
Garnish with an orange slice.
Serve.
Repeat.
A lemon or lime squeezer will be your friend, especially if you’re making a large batch.
Raw agave is a natural sweetener. I found mine at Whole Foods.
I discovered Milagro Tequila in a New York Times article a couple years back, but any 100% agave tequila will work.
I always have a tray of jumbo ice cubes in the freezer. They melt slower so not to dilute your beverage.
