It’s hard to believe that this tranquil oasis is just 45 minutes outside of the hustle and bustle of Marrekech. You drive through the Ourika Valley and come to a dirt road that leads you winding up the hills until you reach the beautiful Kasbah Bab Ourika. You are transported to a chic yet unpretentious hideaway in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
What stood out for me immediately was the design and décor of the Kasbah. British expat owner Stephen Skinner and interior designer Romain Michel-Ménière shared a vision of a traditional Berber style hideaway. All of the rugs, textiles, furniture and artifacts were sourced locally in every shade of brown, white and cream. As if the natural beauty and 360 degree views that surround the property aren’t enough, every nook and cranny of the Kasbah is thoughtfully decorated and each room and terrace is more photogenic than the last.
For breakfast and lunch you dine under the pergola overlooking one of the many beautifully manicured gardens and the massive Atlas Mountains. For dinner you are seated on the terrace surrounded by glowing lanterns. The meals themselves are delicious with locally sourced ingredients, many of which come from the Kasbah’s own garden. The spicy Berber breakfast omelette and vegetable tagine with couscous were amongst my favorites.
If you so choose, there are several excursions to enjoy. Amongst them, kayaking, rafting, skiing, biking, and hot air ballooning. You can also take one of several treks around the area to get the local flavor. For me, I meandered through the gardens, read on one of the many terraces, and lounged by the beautiful pool with some Moroccan tea. It was the peace and calm before my trip continued to Marrakech.
