Syracuse, Sicily | Casually Glam Travels

Siracusa, Sicilia

The last stop on my tour of Sicily was probably my favorite. Syracuse (or Siracusa to the locals) is situated on the south eastern coast. I spent three wonderful nights roaming the beautiful, narrow streets of the old town–Ortygia–which is connected to “mainland” Syracuse by bridges. While so many of the buildings have been beautifully restored, by far the jewel of the old town is the baroque Piazza del Duomo. It is one of the most stunning center squares I have been to in all of Europe. I couldn’t wait to sit in a cafe with a macchiato while watching the world go by…

After two weeks of sightseeing, this was a loosely planned stop. There is plenty to do without being overwhelmed with sites.  If relaxation is on your itinerary, there are small strips of beach to sunbathe and quite a fun looking boat scene if you are so inclined.

Scroll through for a few of my Ortygia favorites.

To Eat // Sicilia in Tavola is a must!  It’s a small trattoria on Via Cavour.  They have two seatings per night, and unfortunately they were booked solid the entirety of my trip.  Luckily, the tables outside are for walk-ins.  The staff has dinner at 7pm and they open the doors promptly at 7:30.  I arrived just aftr 7; I was first in line and able to get a table (score!).  A long line quickly formed so don’t wait until 7:30 if you’re hoping to get a seat.  You don’t want to miss this one! To Drink // Tinkitè is perfect for aperitivo time! It’s set on a corner of a quiet, narrow street. The sun set while I was sitting outside enjoying a bellini.  The sky was the most beautiful shade of blue and the streets lit up with a lovely glow.  It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.  (Via della Giudecca, 61-63, 96100 Siracusa SR, Italy / +39 347 636 3552)

To See // Ortygia is so completely charming.  The narrow and winding streets are fun to get lost in, but the most spectacular spot is the Piazza Del Duomo. Besides the Duomo itself, you’ll find a few cafes to stop and enjoy the scenery.  The buildings are simply stunning.  (Visit my post from Piazza del Duomo here)

To Sleep // Algila’ Ortigia Charme Hotel is a lovely hotel on the water.  The rooms are comfortable and spacious and the decor throughout is simple but beautiful.  Bonus! There is complimentary wine and snacks in the lobby. (Via Vittorio Veneto, 93, 96100 Siracusa SR, Italy / +39 0931 465186)
